Beauty franchise or independent salon: an honest comparison
A franchise buys you a proven approach and brand recognition; an independent salon retains margins and freedom. Costs, constraints and figures to help you choose without preconceptions.

What really changes
A franchise provides a business model, training and supplies in exchange for entry fees, royalties and restrictions; an independent salon requires more work on processes and marketing but retains margins and control over decisions.
| Franchise | Independent | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry costs | Fee 15.000-50.000 € + fit-out to brand specifications | Actual costs only |
| Ongoing costs | Royalties 4-8% + marketing contributions | No royalties |
| Method | Provided and tested | To be developed |
| Supplies | Often restricted | Unrestricted |
| Marketing | National, limited local focus | All to be done, all your own |
| Exit | Contractual restrictions | Unrestricted |
Who each option suits
Franchise suits those starting from scratch in the sector who want a ready-made method; going independent suits those who already know the business and want higher margins and their own identity.
- Franchise: watch out for royalties on revenue (payable even in loss-making months).
- Independent: the method must be acquired through training or developed with consultants.
- In both cases, local marketing remains the responsibility of the business owner.
Checks to make before signing a franchise agreement
Before signing: speak to at least 3 current franchisees (not chosen by the franchisor), read the exit clause and request average figures for salons that have been open for more than 2 years.
The figures that matter are not those of the flagship salon but the median across franchisees: how many are still open after 3 years, how much revenue they generate, what the network is worth on resale.
